CASTLES

A splash of royalty around the Flensburg Firth

The history of the German-Danish region has been shaped by the kings and dukes who lived there. Most of the imposing buildings have since become museums, but the Glücksburg water castle and Gråsten Palace (Gråsten Slot) are still used by royalty today.

Glücksburg Castle

Located in Schleswig-Holstein, this manor is probably one of the most significant Renaissance castles in northern Europe.

Gottorf Castle

Located in beautiful Schleswig, Gottorf Castle takes visitors on a fascinating journey through time.

Husum Castle

You know it’s spring in Husum when, in March, over four million wild crocuses radiate their lovely lilac colour in the park surrounding the castle.

Sønderborg Castle

Originally built in the 12th century, Sønderborg Castle has underwent many expansions before it was given the baroque façade it has today.

Gråsten Palace

Gråsten, the summer residence of Denmark’s royal family, can be reached by travelling along the Baltic Sea coast, around the Flensburg Firth.

Augustenborg Palace

Located on the Danish island of Als, this palace is one of the largest preserved residences of the former Duchy of Schleswig.
